The LGMA Mission Statement To promote the image and the standing of Local Government Management, the development of our members, and take a strategic leadership role in advancing the system of Local Government in Western Australia.
What we do: advocacy
Our communities are best served when local government operates efficiently and effectively.
Local government is the level of government nearest to the people, and has the most immediate effect on their lives. Local government delivers essential services, but these tangibles are only part of its true role as custodian and promoter of the communities it serves.
The practice of local government seeks to build strong communities, now and for the future.
LGMA takes an active role in advocating continuous improvement in the systems of local government and in the practice of local government management.
It speaks out on major industry issues and highlights the important contributions of local government to society.
What we do: communication and representation
LGMA is the best avenue for government and business to communicate with the thousand of professionals employed in and committed to the practice of local government.
The collective knowledge and experience of our members, focused through LGMA, can make an invaluable contribution to broader policy development affecting local government – especially when implementation will be local.
What we do: professional standards
LGMA has a key responsibility in setting and encouraging high standards of professional behaviour and ethical practice. High standards are essential to our goals of professional development and advocacy.
All LGMA members commit to a Code of Ethics built on key principles of honesty, integrity, competence, confidentiality, objectivity, equity and public interest.
What we do: information
National and state newsletters are published regularly to keep members informed about the latest management practices, people and issues in local government.
Advisory services are available to members concerning aspects of their employment and local government legislation and culture.
LGMA also assists local governments with model contracts for senior staff.

Structure
LGMA is a national federation of autonomous state bodies. In practice they work closely together and function as an effective collaborative organisation.
In each state a volunteer Board is elected directly by the members, to manage that state. Each state nominates two members to the national Board.
History
The LGMA began in 1936 when a national association of local government managers was formed. The LGMA WA Division was founded in 1950.
In 2001 the association adopted the new name Local Government Managers Australia. It has divisions in all states with a total membership of several thousand.
