Roads and Signs

Maintenance schedules are utilised by the council to maintain streetscapes and roads within the City of Melville. However, the City also relies on the public to notify us of any hazards.

The City maintains most roads however below is a list of some roads which are maintained by other organisations:

  • The road network at Fiona Stanley Hospital is the responsibility of the City of Melville - please direct all enquiries to Customer Service. Please contact (08) 9364 0666 or 1300 635 845 during business hours or email: melinfo@melville.wa.gov.au.

  • Please refer to Main Roads in regards to sign replacements, potholes and road repairs/maintenance for the following;

    • Leach Highway
    • Canning Highway
    • South Street
    • Kwinana Freeway

Potholes

Potholes are generally caused by a deterioration due to usage, water penetrating the sealed surface and age. To prevent further deterioration, potholes will be dealt with by:

  • Saw-cutting the ground around the pothole
  • Reinstating the road base
  • Reinstatinstating asphalt and compacting to road level.

Once a pothole has been reported the City will act on it as soon as possible.  The City may also take these actions:

  • Fill any minor depressions in the road with asphalt
  • Including Road Base in repaoromg Major depressions
  • Severe road cracking may have the inclusion of a profilier.

Roadcrack Sealing

Crack sealing works within the City will be prioritised, in conjunction with the Road Resurfacing Programme based on condition assessment of the road audit report done every five years.

The tendered Crack Sealing programme is undertaken once a year & is completed in approximately one month. The City  is responsible for the monitoring of these works to ensure the contractor meets the specifications and safety guidelines.

Crack sealing works undertaken outside this program are at the decision of the Operations or Assets Manager.

Resurfacing

Generally road resurfacing occurs from road condition surveys, conducted every 5 years by an external consultant to assess and provide ongoing condition monitoring as part of general work practices.

Requests must be submitted in a written application, requesting the street to be considered for resurfacing.

Generally a 30mm of asphalt is layed on top of the existing road surface, but works may include

  • excavation of road sections;
  • the upgrade of associated road assets (drainage,kerbing, footpaths, crossovers, line marking, islands, etc).

The appointed contractor will send the residents notification of the work to be done at least 10 days before commencement of work, advising timeframes and estimated time of completion. If you have any concerns regarding the work contact customer service on 1300 635 845 or

The City will send a completion letter once the road resurfacing has reached the practical completion stage, to give residents 10 days to respond to any reticulation damage or other concerns. Any damages reported after the 10 days will be assessed and might not be actioned.

Linemarking

Line Marking is used to distinguish car parking bays and road lanes. You can request line marking for any City of Melville owned property. This includes reserve carparks, general carparks, and small local roads.

An example of City of property include:

  • Offside street parking.
  • Shopping Centres.
  • Recreation Centres.
  • Linemarking for Reserve Carparks.
  • Request for cats eyes (illuminates) can also be requested here, for roads, median strips etc

Street Sweeping

The City provides a street sweeping program which is run on an 8 week cycle. These sweeps will assist in removing dirt and debris from the road edges. For up-to-date information on the current area being swept, see our Current Works section.

Street Signs

The City is responsible for the following types of Signs:

  • Street Names
  • Parking Restrictions
  • No Stopping/Parking
  • Reserve/Park Names, and;
  • Community Directional Signs such as Libraries, Sporting clubs, Post offices etc.

City of Melville signs are mounted on round poles.

  • Speed Signs
  • Traffic Signs

Main Roads WA signs are usually mounted on yellow coloured poles.
