Community Plan to Provide Clear Vision for Melville’s Future

The community has another chance to comment on the City of Melville’s future as the Council develops its first long-term Community Plan.

Community forums will be held in local neighbourhoods in March and April for people to have input into the Community Plan 2007-2017, which will establish a clear vision for the future of the municipality in line with community expectations.

Mayor Katherine Jackson said the plan, which would be the key strategic document for guiding the Council’s business planning and service delivery, was based on the feedback received from the extensive community consultation undertaken during the Melville Visions: Community Perspectives on Our City – Our Future project.

“The award-winning Melville Visions provided a unique opportunity for the Melville community to contribute and influence the future directions of the City of Melville,” she said. “Issues such as housing density and diversity, transportation management, strategic direction, social and cultural improvement and facility and infrastructure provision were covered. The development of a Community Plan is the next step in the process.”

Chief Executive Officer Eric Lumsden said the long-term Community Plan recognised the role of the local community in determining its own future. “The aim is to develop common aims and objectives, which will help guide all sections of the community, including the Council, in working together to achieve our community aspirations,” he said. “The plan is being written to inform all members of the community and assist in prioritising activities of greatest importance.”

Mr Lumsden said the 10-year Community Plan would be reviewed every four years. “The first Community Plan will be presented to Council in June 2007,” he said.
