Background
The City of Melville’s Heathcote Museum and Gallery is set to showcase the experiences of one backpacker’s journey across South America.
From 1 March to 5 April, the Applecross gallery will host Vistas de Sentimientos – A South American Experience, featuring a collection of paintings, photography and found objects produced and collected by young artist Miles Noel.
The Shenton Park 24-year-old, who has operated a freelance graphic design service and worked for local publications, said in Vistas de Sentimientos he had used spontaneous and layered artistic effects to recreate the vibrant environment of South America. He particularly became fascinated with the surfaces of the decaying built environment as well as religious iconography.
“It was on the first day of arriving in Pelhourino, Brazil, at the beginning of five months’ backpacking around South America, a spell was cast over me,” he said. “I was captivated by the magic that lay in the infusion of its dark colonial past and the colour and vibrancy of the local people and environment. Aided by my SLR camera and a curious sense of adventure, I continued through Argentina, Bolivia, Peru and finally Colombia.”
Noel, who has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Curtin University specialising in graphic design, said he was a self-taught painter who liked to experiment. “Generally, I work from photographic reference, enhancing and stylising the image,” he said. “I employ the computer occasionally to refine a composition. My most commercially appealing style, consisting of glossy, polished, idealised imagery executed in rich, luminous colour, has evolved from my graphic design background.”
