Stephen Armitstead and Lia McKnight :: 11 March - 10 April 2011
the elusive light will feature works by Stephen Armitstead and Lia McKnight, including their first ever collaborative work.
In direct response to the Heathcote Gallery, its particular spaces and architecture, the exhibition will feature new objects, installations, photography and video installations.
All works relate to the word ‘light’ and its various meanings, that is: illumination; lack of weight (or mass), delicacy, and the absence of profundity. Several works capture natural and artificial light through photography, video or reflective surfaces, or capture delicacy and fragility through a use of materials (such as paper, salt crystals and found ephemera). Other works investigate ‘lightness’ by documenting mass through its imprint on paper or explore notions of decisions ‘made lightly’.
Heathcote Museum and Gallery is situated in the historic and heritage protected site of the old Heathcote Mental Reception Home. The Gallery is made up of small rooms and passages as well as larger open areas that feature elevated apertures (small rectangular windows and ventilation holes) and original character light fittings.
Intervening with and incorporating the interior spaces of the site, the exhibition is intended to be a spatial and sensorial experience for visitors.
