Metamorphica + Captured in Stitch

Art lovers will have an opportunity to see Western Australian textile artists explore the beauty, impact and nature of the earth in a combined exhibition at the Heathcote Museum and Gallery.

Metamorphica is the first solo exhibition for 25-year-old artist Hannah Katarski, who is a self-taught textile artist and one of the youngest members of the Embroiderers’ Guild of WA.

Katarski said Metamorphica had enabled her to explore the impact our actions were having on the earth. “Not only is our earth undergoing a metamorphosis, but our perceptions also have to change to ensure our posterity,” she said. “Creating artwork by manipulating fabrics with heat and pressure has been a metaphor for the pressures we are now facing as a species.”

Reflections of WA, Captured in Stitch is a daring collaboration of three Western Australian textile artists Jennie Abbott, Christine Atkins and Marilyn Farrow, and represents the diversity and lushness of the environment. The textiles depict thought provoking and whimsical fabric creations, coloured to match the earthy and bold tones of the State.

Heathcote Museum and Gallery Curator Soula Veyradier said both exhibitions showed the importance and intrigue of the natural environment. “Each artist investigates their relationship and response to the environment, translating it into deceptively simple or intriguingly complex works of art,” she said.

Metamorphica and Reflections of WA, Captured in Stitch will be open to the public at Heathcote Museum and Gallery from 10:00am to 3:00pm, Tuesday to Friday, and 11:00am to 3:00pm on weekends.
