A year in the making, 10 female Western Australian jewellers are showcasing new contemporary jewellery works. This body of work represents the participants’ involvement in the FORM Contemporary Craft and Design initiative - Designing Futures Contemporary Wearables Cluster.
Helena Bogucki, Claire Brooks, Kim Christian, Carolyn Gorman, Jessica Jubb, Nicole Lance, Carrie McDowell, Claire Moody, Leah Tarlo and Fern Vallesi come from diverse backgrounds. Some are trained, others self-taught and one is a fourth generation silversmith.
The opportunity to participate in the Contemporary Wearables Cluster has been important for everyone involved. It has allowed them to build networks within the industry and begin to build sustainable practices.
This group of jewellers worked under the mentorship of Julie Blyfield, an Adelaide based silversmith currently a fulltime partner in the Gray Street Workshop, and Jon Goulder, a contemporary furniture designer currently based in Perth.
Over a series of 5 workshops, the jewellers were immersed in design process, beginning with initial concept and working right through to finished product. The jewellers were encouraged to move out of their ‘comfort zones’, experiment with different materials and processes and develop new skills.
This exhibition is a showcase of the end results.
The process may be complete, but these women will continue to sustain and support each other. They are now connected, they share a common link.
The exhibition is on show from Friday 11 July to Sunday 10 August at Heathcote Museum & Gallery.
