Project Background

Imagine: A Future Plan for Libraries, Museums & Local History

The City of Melville Libraries and Museums are trusted, respected and valued by the community and are an essential part of the community’s social capital.

The City of Melville manages five public libraries, two museums, a local history service and a museum/art gallery.

The relevance of our libraries and museums to today’s community is evident in their high levels of use and attraction to a broad range of users from all ages and backgrounds.

With the changing environment and community expectations, our libraries and museums will only prosper if we continue to evolve. The information revolution is changing people’s expectations of services. It has been evident that our Libraries and Museums are fast becoming ‘community hubs’ where people can meet and exchange ideas and information. Thus it is critical that future services are contemporary and responsive to change, so they remain current and relevant to the communities they serve.

The Future Plan for Libraries, Museums & Local History Services will be a document that creates a strong vision and aspirations for the future; it will be community, place and people focused. The Plan will be innovative and inspiring and will guide future direction for our services for the following five years (2010/2011 – 2014/2015). The plan will encompass all aspects of our services and provide a framework for implementation that is realistic and sustainable.
