Point Walter Reserve Foreshore Restoration

The City of Melville has endorsed the Point Walter Reserve Foreshore Restoration Concept Plan and has commenced initial site assessments and approval application processes for the project.

Point Walter Reserve is one of Perth's most popular and well loved foreshore reserves. With its beautiful sandy beaches and expansive grassed areas, it is a great place to come and relax or to access the river for boating.

Its popularity does mean that it faces immense environmental pressures such as erosion, vegetation loss and weed invasion. To address these issues and to protect the environmental and recreational values, the City of Melville has developed the Point Walter Foreshore Restoration Concept Plan.

The plan outlines a proposed concept for the environmental restoration of the foreshore and is not intended to represent the final design and ideas of the project to be implemented. Community comments have been gathered and presented to Council and along with the concept plan and project business case were endorsed on September 21, 2010.

Initial site assessments and planning for the required approvals for the project has commenced, in addition to tender preparation for the detailed design contract. This initial planning, investigation and design phase will continue into mid 2011, and construction is expected to commence March 2012.

The Point Walter foreshore has changed dramatically since the concept plan was devised well over 12 months ago, totally moving the goalposts. Please get the people involved to revisit the beach and see how much the erosion has increased in the last 6 months. I walk there most mornings and I now dispair at the idea of "thatching" placed all along the beach which will ruin the free length of beach access and probably have no chance of reducing erosion. Just trim the sandy 1-metre cliffs to a gentle slope and remove all the retic pipes and dead trees. Leave it be, let nature take its course, and please stop meddling with the Swan River.

The effects of several seasons of higher than normal tides, increased boat wash, and lack of monitorring has taken its toll. The beach needs to be rebuilt by either dredging(i remember the first time this was done)or carting in huge quantities of sand.Either way a costly exercise but one which is essential as the problem will, and is getting worse!
