Renewable Power at Piney Lakes: Static Solar Array

Sustainable Homes Tour

Come and take a tour of the Piney Lakes Environmental Education Centre to learn about the sustainable building design, the remote area power supply, water catchment system, sewerage treatment, waste-resource management and how this all makes a building with a low carbon footprint. Students will discuss actions to take in their homes and at school to help reduce energy use and waste.

Identifying Native Flora: Melaleuca raphiophylla

Happy Habitats

This involves going on a bushwalk to observe and discuss the features of the landscape, vegetation types, biodiversity, urban land use issues, local flora and fauna species, indigenous history, altered habitats, adaptations and general awareness of the environment.

Identifying Minibeasts! - Mollusca

Minibeasts!

Students go into the pine plantation / bushland and collect invertebrates living in the ecosystem and are given a worksheet to help them identify their minibeast. If time permits, go back to the centre and record all results on a board and develop a food chain/web for Piney Lakes Reserve. Suitable for Primary School ages. This program is only available in terms 2 and 3.

Piney Lakes Remnant Wetland: Wet Season

Little Creatures in the Lake

Students visit the artificial lake or natural Piney Lake wetland to observe the environment of native aquatic species. Students then return to the education centre to study samples of aquatic invertebrates and use a worksheet and identification charts to complete activities.

Noongar Boodja Waakiny - Talking About Noongar Country

Schools will have the option to book one class into an education session based at Piney Lakes Environmental Education Centre, detailing traditional Noongar culture in educational activities and by completing a guided tour of the Bidi Katitjiny Aboriginal Women's Trail, which is based on the Noongar six seasons.

Observing Indicator Species of Wildlife at the Man-made Lake

Climate-watchers

Climatewatch is an initiative of the Earthwatch Institute of Australia. It is aimed at people of all ages - Australia wide, to join forces in gathering data to aid scientists in their research on climate change. Students partake in a "scientist for a day" activity that has been created by the Climatewatch initiative by partaking in a bushwalk to identify native species of flora and fauna and to collect data on flowering patterns, seeding and behaviours of the species. Students can then return to school and enter their data into a global website, aiding scientists in their quest to determine the effects of climate change on our native wildlife.
