Water use and efficiency
The centre is not connected to mains water or sewerage - find out how we manage our water
The building is not connected to
mains water or sewerage. Water saving toilets used at the venue use
bacteria to efficiently break down waste products, reducing the need
for water by up to 80%. Toilets include urinals that use no water for
flushing and special hybrid toilets that use no, or only minimal,
water. Conventional dual flush toilets in the building use bore water,
thereby saving precious rainwater for drinking and other potable use.
Biological waste treatment tanks in the Water Treatment Room house the bacteria used to break down toilet wastes. Waste slowly passes through the tanks and is broken down to produce gas (vented) and water (of very high quality, used for irrigation). These tanks should never need to be emptied.
A 60
000L rainwater tank (RIGHT) collects rainwater from the roof surface for use in
the building. An on-demand solar pump then delivers water to two
header tanks on top of Technology Tower. These header tanks provide the
water pressure (gravity) back into the building. Drinking water is
treated via filtration and ultra-violet sterilisation before being used. (Potable water treatment unit pictured below)
An Ecomax system treats all traditional toilet, basin and sink waste waters to such a high standard, that it is acceptable to return the treated liquid into the ground water table.
