Grants received
-
$18000 through the City of Melville for weed control and re-vegetation of the foreshore from Kent St to Braunton St Bicton.
- $15000 from Lotterywest for bird boxes and equipment for working in the bush land
Work carried out
- About 10 000 indigenous trees and shrubs planted into the Point Walter bush land near Point Walter Road.
- 1000 seedlings planted along the foreshore by Bicton Primary School and BEAG members.
- Weed control in the bush land between Kent St and Point Walter Rd to facilitate further planting.
- Clean up of rocks and shell from the swimming area at Bicton Baths – about 5 cubic metres of rock and shell were collected.
- The annual clean up of the foreshore along Blackwall Reach resulted in less rubbish indicating that the regular cleaning has helped to reduce the rubbish load.
- A herbarium of local plants and introduced weeds was developed by Errol Allan to help members to identify plants in the bush land.
- Systematic removal of bee hives started in 2006 has resulted on over 50 hives being removed.
Projects for 2007
- Ongoing smoked water trials in the bush land to encourage germination of remnant seed in the soil.
- Placing coir matting along the foreshore to facilitate re-vegetation of native plants and reed beds.
- Continuing program to remove feral bees from bush land.
- Continued planting and maintenance of regenerated bush land.
- Further work on the rock and shell bed in the Bicton Baths swimming area.
- Regular cleanup of the foreshore and monitoring of weed infestation.
