Grants received

  • $18,000 through the City of Melville for weed control and re-vegetation of the foreshore from Kent St to Braunton St Bicton.
  • $15,000 from Lotterywest for bird boxes and equipment for working in the bush land.


Work carried out

  • About 10,000 indigenous trees and shrubs planted into the Point Walter bush land near Point Walter Road.
  • 1,000 seedlings planted along the foreshore by Bicton Primary School and BEAG members.
  • Weed control in the bush land between Kent St and Point Walter Rd to facilitate further planting.
  • Clean up of rocks and shell from the swimming area at Bicton Baths – about five cubic metres of rock and shell  were collected.
  • The annual clean up of the foreshore along Blackwall Reach resulted in less rubbish indicating that the regular cleaning has helped to reduce the rubbish load.
  • A herbarium of local plants and introduced weeds was developed by Errol Allan to help members to identify plants in the bush land.
  • Systematic removal of bee hives started in 2006 has resulted on over 50 hives being removed.

 

Activities 2009/2010

  • Hand weeding  along the Blackwall Reach foreshore and in the Point Walter Reserve bushland.
  • Targeted weeds - Geraldton Carnation Weed, Fumitory, Lupins and Wild Radish. Ongoing vigilance to avoid their reintroduction.
  • Trialled smoke water treatment of seed as an alternative to planting seedlings.
  • Planted over 1,000 plants in the bushland and along the foreshore.
  • Placing 10 new bat boxes in the reserve and maintaining old boxes and continued removal of feral beehives with thanks to Joe Tonga.    * Community presentation by Joe Tonga at Bicton Primary School.
  • Training on use of GPS.
  • Continued fox control program with Cities of Melville and Fremantle, Town of East Fremantle, Department of Defence and Fremantle Port Authority.
  • Removal of four cubic metres of shell from Bicton Baths.  Swan River Trust also removed three cubic metres of shell and broken glass through a contractor.
  • Foreshore cleanups along Blackwall Reach from Bicton Baths to Point Walter.
  • Acquitted grant of $35,000 for weed and erosion control, fencing and planting.

 

2010 Focus

  • Launch of the book and CD 'Bush Buddies' written by Renie Allen and illustrated by Sharon Levine.
  • Improve weed control in the Point Walter Reserve to reduce fire risk and competition for moisture.
  • Collection of local provenance seed for smoke water trials.
  • Continue weeding and planting in the Reserve and along the foreshore.
  • Continue work on the Bicton Bath shell bed.
  • Continue to address issue the tenders along the river bank.
