Dieback Project

This Dieback project aims to map and treat Phytophthora dieback in the City of Melville’s bushland reserves. Phytophthora dieback treatment entails stem injecting susceptible plant species within the treatment area with a phosphate based fungicide which is an environmentally friendly, neutralized acid. Phosphite works by boosting the plant’s own natural defences and thereby allowing susceptible plants to survive within Phytophthora infested bushland. All the remaining host plants are folia sprayed with the same product at more dilute concentrations. This system of treatment has been scientifically proven to be effective at controlling the impact of Phytophthora dieback by various bodies including the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) and Mudoch University’s Centre for Phytophthora Science and Management (CPSM).
