What is the YAC exactly?
The YAC is a group of young people aged 12-25 that come together once a month.
We’re similar to the various student councils that exist in schools but we tend to look at issues or projects across the whole city, and look to provide a voice for young people in the City of Melville. We also act as a reference group for organisations that are looking to engage with or provide services to young people in our area.
The YAC is a chance to get involved, meet other young leaders and influence and empower your peers. No particular skills are required, just your enthusiasm and motivation.
What does the YAC do?
Well, that’s up to the members. The YAC provides the opportunity to get together with other young people and work on something that you care about.
From music and art events to advocating for social justice or health & well being issues to influencing policy changes, whatever your passion is the YAC will embrace it. By being a part of YAC we can help you access resources, grants, specialised knowledge or training.
You determine your level of involvement. Only want to work on music events? Great! Want to work everything? Still great! Not sure if it’s something that interests you buy want to check it out? We’d love to have you along.
We’re also an important link to young people for the City of Melville; the YAC is there to make the needs of young people known, providing feedback, suggestions and direction for the City.
Ultimately the YAC is what you make it.
Over the next couple of months we have projects and workshops with Propel Youth Arts, Youth Tree, TedX, the Australian Youth Climate Coalition, the Headspace Youth Reference Group as well as our monthly music events and more. Want something else? Let us know!
How can I get involved?
Just start turning up to meetings! You can also get involved with the discussions via email or Facebook.
Currently we have ‘General’ meetings once a month. The project groups like the ‘Arts & Media Collective’ or ‘Music Committee’ currently meet once or twice a month depending on their workload.
