Designing Out Crime Case Study

The City of Melville recently commissioned a consultant to conduct a review of the Leeming Recreation site (The Rec) in relation to preventing crime through environmental design (CPTED), also known as Designing out Crime (DOC).

The review identified that some of the current crime and unwanted behaviour occurring at the site was facilitated by fundamental issues surrounding the site.  Some of the issues identified by the review at the site include:

  • Lack of natural surveillance from surrounding areas and residents.
  • Lack of territorial reinforcement.
  • Lack of natural access control.
  • Surrounding vegetation providing a potential fire hazard.
  • Potential tools/weapons/missiles on site (e.g. bricks).
  • Design of buildings lack inherent secure design.

In response to recommendations detailed in the review, works have been scheduled to improve visibility and natural surveillance within the designated area.  Please refer to figure 1.1.  Works will involve the thinning out of the vegetation along Findlay Road adjacent to Peter Ellis Reserve, with it being replaced with more suitable native species’ that will not impede visibility to the area.
