Report from Palmyra Police Station 5 March 2010
Hi and welcome to this edition of eNews. This edition I’ll be discussing some common road safety issues which you can use to consider if you are a safe driver. I’ll also be sharing a great recent success story from diligent officers at the Palmyra Police Station.
Are you a safe driver?
It continues to astound me the number of inconsiderate drivers on our roads. Despite the constant messages about road safety, there are still a percentage of people who still flout the road rules and put themselves and others at risk. Not indicating, using a mobile phone, and speeding are all factors that can contribute to crashes and everyday the officers at Palmyra are issuing Traffic Infringement Notices for these offences.
Did you know that Western Australian drivers are renowned for following too close to the vehicle in front of them? I am sure you have all witnessed this and may even be guilty of it. This practise results in a very large number of traffic crashes, and quite simply, if you run into the car in front of you, you were following too close. The rule book states you should travel at a distance that enables you stop in an emergency without running into the rear of the car in front. As a former driver training instructor, I always encouraged students to drive 2 seconds behind the car in front irrespective of the speed they were travelling at, and of course wet conditions it should be increased to 4 seconds.
Success stories
A recent quick response by two officers from the Palmyra Police Station resulted in the apprehension of an offender. Officers were called to attend a major department store in Garden City regarding a stealing offence and thanks to their keen observations, located one of the offenders in a car in the car park. Inside the vehicle officers found $4500.00 worth of stolen clothes, linen and chocolate that had been stolen from two major department stores. Inquiries are continuing to locate a second offender.
The Palmyra Police Station is open Monday to Friday from 8.00am to 4.00pm but our officers patrol this area 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Please remember that if you need police assistance contact 131 444, or if you have information regarding any criminal activity contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 where your identity can remain confidential. Save 000 for life threatening emergencies only.
