Safer Melville was officially launched on the 6 August 2009 as part of the newly developed Safer Melville 2008 - 2012 Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan, as well as the re-establishment of the Safer Melville Advisory Committee.
In June 2005 the City of Melville signed a partnership agreement with the Office of Crime Prevention and adopted its position on community safety and crime prevention. Primary responsibility for policing, community safety and crime prevention lies with State Government agencies such as the police. The City of Melville plays a support role in working with the community, State Government agencies, and other stakeholders to achieve sustainable community safety and crime prevention outcomes.
As part of the partnership agreement with the Office of Crime Prevention the City developed the 2005-2008 Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan. The 2005-2008 plan has successfully been implemented and the newly developed Safer Melville 2008 – 2012 Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan builds on the success and progress made in this area thus far.
