Successful Projects and Partnerships

Formed in 1999, Walyalup has won awards for community service, reconciliation and volunteering. The group has been directly involved with and provided support for over 40 events.

Walyalup Reconciliation Group is not an incorporated group and as such has no formal management structure.   The group works closely with the City of Melville Liaison Officer, Gail Beck; providing voluntary support for her projects, as well as initiating community projects.  

Indigenous Oral History Project – Walyalup/City Libraries

  • 2004/2005: Walyalup successfully translates experiences with Oral History Project from Fremantle to Cockburn Council.
  • 2004: Walyalup gains 175th Anniversary &  DIA grants for Oral Histories in Cockburn.
  • 2003: Walyalup and City of Fremantle Library run training course in collecting Oral History, and two trainees subsequently are employed. They have recorded eight oral histories to date. One trainee gains ongoing employment with City of Fremantle.
  • 2003: Walyalup gains grant from Deptartment of Indigenous Affairs for Oral Histories in Fremantle.

 

Wongi Mia – Walyalup

  • 2001: After 2 years of promoting useful networking on positive indigenous issues with their friendly “drop in” atmosphere at the Wongi Mia office, core Walyalup volunteers decide to close due to inability to attract serious funding sources.
  • 2001: Art Expo of thirteen indigenous artists successfully staged by Wongi Mia group in “The Works”, Fremantle, with 45 exhibits sold. Further success followed for Expo artist Gloria Bliss in being invited to participate in “Every Women’s Expo” in 2002.
  • 1999: Wongi Mia office (meeting/talking place) established in Victoria Hall Fremantle by core Walyalup members Marie Thorne and Pauline Conner. It was funded by public donation and staffed by Walyalup volunteers.

 

Reconciliation Community Events - Walyalup          

  • 2007 Visit to Roelands Mission – Aboriginal & non-Aboriginals with City of Melville assistance. 
  • 2006: “Sharing Our Stories” Community Evening of Awareness Raising Melville.
  • 2004/2005: HipHop workshops for school students at Willagee&Melville with reconciliation theme
  • 2002: “Respect Yourself Respect Your Culture Wagyl Awareness Walk” organized for Melville Festival by Walyalup. Wagyl Art Competition run for local schools and exhibited at Heathcote.
  • 2001: “Kooya Awareness Walk” organized for Melville Festival by Walyalup. 100 message sticks made by local students were presented to the walkers to raise awareness of areas of concern.
  • 2000: Banner of Commitment painting day organized by Walyalup. For use in Bridge Walk.
  • 1999: “Bunuru Healing Walk” organized for Melville Festival by Walyalup
  • 1999: Reconcilioke Night, Victoria Hall Fremantle – successfully organized and run by Walyalup.
  • 1998: “Sea of Hands” Parade and Concert in Fremantle – organized by Fremantle Reconciliation Group which became Walyalup.
  • 1998: “Sorry Day” Ceremony in Fremantle organized by Fremantle Reconciliation Group which became Walyalup.
  • 1997: “Coexistence Concert” successfully co-organised by ANTAR and Fremantle Reconciliation Group which became Walyalup.

Festivals & Civic Events- Significant Walyalup participation        

  • 2002: Duyfken’ Homecoming – Captain’s Journal presented to Walyalup.
  • 2001: Wardungi Festival Fremantle – participation with food and information.
  • 2000: Duyfken’s Re-enactment Voyage – Walyalup prepared and presented message sticks to go to the Cape York community.
  • 2000: Wardungi Festival Fremantle – participation.
  • 1999: “Pioneer Park Reconciliation Mural” was painted by Walyalup member, Melanie Evans with Walyalup support.
  • 1998: Fremantle Festival Parade – Walyalup Time-Line Entry voted Parade Winner.  
  • 1998: B. T. W. Bringing Together Willagee Reconciliation Project Launch with culturally appropriate information, dance, song, and food.

 

Meals to Music – Walyalup/City of Melville

  •  2004/2005: Walyalup continues support with increase in numbers of volunteers.
  •   2003: Kwoberup joins the expanding Meals to Music program.
  •   2002: April: Assisted coordination of Meals to Music Respite Day for indigenous elders
