The City of Melville wishes its Chinese community Gong Xi Far Tsai (Happy New Year)
According to the 2006 Census, Western Australia has the largest proportion of people born overseas with more than half a million people (27.1% ) born overseas. Almost half of the population had one or both parents born overseas and nearly a quarter of a million people spoke a language other than English at home.
Today, the City of Melville is home to 99,351 people. Overall, 31.9% of the population was born overseas, and 17.8% were from a non-English speaking background. The majority of these residents speak a language other than English at home, the most common being Mandarin, Cantonese, Italian, Indonesian and German.
The City of Melville has a strong commitment to valuing the cultural diversity of our residents and could not miss the opportunity to acknowledge our Chinese community and their celebrations towards the beginning of a New Year. Gong Xi Far Tsai (Happy New Year)!
