Men's Health
Men's Health is important to men in the community and the workplace. The City of Melville has developed a variety of pathways for the education and empowerment of men to embrace their health needs preventatively rather than reactively.
In 1996 a multifaceted community health promotion campaign targeting men’s health was undertaken.
Recognising men’s health care as a critical issue directly impacting on community wellbeing, the program set out to meet a shortage of healthcare information specifically targeting men and teenage boys. Additionally the program actively promotes community awareness and cooperation to address declining male health standards.
As a result of this project two unique publications have been developed which discuss a broad range of health issues relevant to men and young men. Presented in an easy to read and attractive format the publications contain information drawn from both professional research and community input and are made available to the City of Melville community free of charge.
The project continues to address gaps in service provision for men and boys by exploring other opportunities to get helpful information to the community. The most recent initiative is the development of a DVD resource for use in schools and organisations working with young men which deals with the emotional health issues facing young men.
The dvd SIX consists of six films and sets of learning experiences which are designed to support teachers or facilitators to improve the capacity of young men aged 15-25 years to deal with emotional health issues typically faced by young men. The six short films relate to self esteem, relationships, sexuality, stealing, choices and drunk driving.
