Cats in the Community
Uncontrolled cats mating at night is a major source of noise complaints.
The City of Melville offers a subsidy of $40.00 towards the cost of Cat Sterilisation which may be claimed following production of a sterilisation certificate from a registered Vet.
For further details contact the City of Melville on 9364 0628 or call into the City of Melville Civic Centre between 8.30am and 5.00pm Monday to Friday.
Cats are nocturnal and hence most mating and territorial behaviours occur at night. To help minimise the impact on your neighbours it is a good idea to have your cat sterilised.
Sterilised male cats:
- wander less and their urine doesn’t have a high hormonal odour.
- are healthier, live longer and are less of a nuisance to the community.
Preferably cats should be confined to a pen or house at night – between 8pm and 7am. Cats will wander further at night which not only puts wildlife at risk but they could be hit by a car or savaged by another animal.
Concerns
The State Government recently passed the Cat Act which is due to come into full force in November 2013.
The City will provide more information on the new Act and how it may affect cat owners in the City of Melville as we get closer to November 2013.
Residents whom have concerns in regards to cats are to contact the Cat Haven or the RSPCA or the Cat Alliance of Australia Inc
City of Melville Rangers do hire Cat Traps for nuisance cats. However, if a trap is hired and the cat is caught, and it has identification on it, it must be returned to its owner, otherwise if the cat has no identification it must be taken to either the Cat Haven, RSPCA or their Local Vet.
