Awards

The City of Melville has received a number of awards and accreditations in recognition of its accomplishments in a number of different areas.

Below are some of the City's key achievements over a diverse range of areas.

Business Excellence Award*

The City received the Excellence Prize Award in October 2017, becoming only the third Australian organisation to ever achieve this level of recognition for Business Excellence in 30 years. The City previously received a Silver Award in 2012 and a Gold Award in 2015 as part of the Australian Business Excellence Awards.

The Business Excellence Awards recognise outstanding achievement by leading Australian organisations on the journey to excellence against a set of internationally recognised and rigorous criteria, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable results, systems and processes.

Financial Health Indicator*

The  State Government’s latest initiative, the Mycouncil website - mycouncil.wa.gov.au - improves financial transparency across the local government sector, giving ratepayers financial information about how council spends, raises and manages its money.

The City of Melville is currently ranked as the highest performing council in the State for Financial Health for the second year running, scoring 98 /100 in 2015/2016.

  • 82 in 2012/2013

*The Financial Health Indicator score is calculated from seven financial ratios that local governments are required to report on annually. Each financial ratio is scored and the weighted average then calculated to give an overall score out of 100. The benchmark score is 70, with a highest possible score of 100.

Customer Service Institute of Australia – Government Award

The City was awarded the Service Excellence Award – Government - Best Performing Government Body in Australia. Judging criteria are based on international customer service standards across 27 different parameters that consider the organisation from a service,  operational perspective, a learning and growth perspective as well as a financial and governance perspective

Property Council Australia - Best Practice Planning Performance

Benchmarked against all other Local Goverment authorities in Western Australia, the City achieved the highest possible score of 94%(21.7 out of 23) for planning perfomance determined across a best practice local planning framework including Strategic planning, Statutory planning, Delegation of approvals to planning officers and Timeliness of approvals.

Financial State Ranking

Key findings of an independent study ranked the City second place in the State for financial sustainability and third place average ranking over five years.

The Financial Position Review was conducted by the Metropolitan Local Government Review Panel to assess and rank the financial position of 30 local governments throughout metropolitan Perth.

The results confirm the Citys strong and sound fiscal position, and focus to deliver value for money and sustainable outcomes for our residents.

Public Participation Award

The City was named Organisation of the Year by the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) Australasia, for their Core Values Award.

The Award acknowledges the Citys ongoing and robust commitment to embedding public participation throughout an organisation and is the result of an ongoing effort to build good community engagement practices into the organisational culture.

The focus is to ensure a consistent community engagement process is applied which can continue to improve into the future.

 

Planning Excellence Award

The WA Planning Institute of Australia awarded the City Western Australias Improved Planning Processes and Practices Award for Optimise, the name given to the Citys innovative end-to-end electronic system for faster and more efficient processing of planning and building applications.

The judges commended Optimise for delivering cost savings, improving accountability and governance and streamlining the entire planning and building application process.

Australian Service Excellence Award

The City was awarded State and National Gold in the Australian Service Excellence Awards for customer service.

The Award acknowledges the Citys commitment to excellence, embedded throughout the organisations management and training practices for customer service.

Chief Executive Officer, Dr Shayne Silcox also received the award for CEO of the Year.

TravelSmart Award

A project to upgrade a shared path in Rossmoyne was recognised by the Department of Transport and Department of Environment and Conservation when the City received an award in the Build category.

The City of Melville has been promoting TravelSmart initiatives since 2000, improving access to sustainable and healthy alternatives such as walking, cycling and public transport to reduce the communitys ecological foot print.
