Canning Bridge Study
Information about a Strategic Planning project investigating the Canning Bridge area.
Introduction
The City of Melville, City of South Perth and Department for Planning and Infrastructure (DPI) on behalf of the Western Australian Planning Commission has engaged the services of consultants GHD Pty Ltd to undertake a planning analysis of the Canning Bridge Rail Station Precinct.
The City of Melville will undertake the role of project manager.
Project Study Area
The study focuses on the Canning Bridge rail station precinct that falls within both the City of Melville and the City of South Perth municipalities.
The study boundary comprises a radius of approximately 1 kilometre from the station and in the City of Melville extends up to Sleat Road but is not rigid and is a guide only.
Project Objective
The main objective of the study is to support the study area as an activity centre, within the context of the Western Australian Planning Commissions Network City policy and surrounding activity centres being developed in accordance with best practice and Transit Oriented Design principles.
Scope
In summary the main issues are to consider:
- options for use of City and State owned land
- infrastructure funding
- economics-business vitality, employment
- urban design, principles and detailed guidelines
- movement network incl- parking and public transport
- statutory planning – zoning, densities, plot ratios, heights, parking requirements, bonuses .
The study is expected to be finalized in September 2008
Outputs
The primary outputs of the study will be:
- Preferred precinct plans for each of the municipalities to be able to independently consider, and consult with their communities
- An urban design framework
- A strategic implementation guide
The consultant is required to develop a stakeholder consultation and communication program for the project with the steering group.
The study will assist the City in resolving Town Planning Scheme Amendment 35 for Canning Bridge Precinct, progressing the City of Melville Riverside Project, and providing a direction for resolving urban design, parking issues and other planning matters for the precinct.
