2006 Awards
The City's 2006 awards were in the areas of planning, road safety, sustainability, cultural harmony, heart health, seniors and water efficiency, among others.
Planning – The City’s Strategic Urban Planning received the PIA (Planning Institute of Australia - Western Australia Division) Award for Excellence in the Community-Based Planning category for Melville Visions: Community perspectives on Our City-Our Future. The Award was presented at the annual PIA Awards event in November 2006 at Government House.
Road Safety – The Road Safety Council awarded the City of Melville for its work in implementing road safety initiatives in February 2006. The award was for "Outstanding commitment to Road Safety" and was "in appreciation of its long-term commitment to improving road safety through innovative engineering and community-based programs for pedestrians and cyclists".
Sustainability – In early 2006, the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) - Local Governments for Sustainability, Australia/New Zealand (ICLEI-A/NZ) commended the City of Melville for its commitment to sustainable practices for the second consecutive year. The City was highly commended for the Sustainable Transport Local Government Innovation Award.
Cultural Harmony – The City of Melville was the inaugural award recipient for the Organisation Category at the Office of Multicultural Interests' 2006 Multicultural Community Service Awards. The Awards provide an opportunity to acknowledge positive contributions in empowering culturally and linguistically-diverse groups.
The City was said to display a strong commitment to multiculturalism, human rights and anti-racism through the development of plans and programs that break down barriers and encourage harmonious relationships within the community.
Heart Health – The City of Melville was named a WA State Winner in August in the 2006 Heart Foundation Kellogg WA Local Government Awards. The City's 'Recreation Centres and Seniors' Program was the WA Winner in the Provision and Use of Facilities to Improve Heart Health category.
Seniors – The City of Melville was in October 2006 announced as the winner in the Active Ageing Leadership Award category in the Office for Seniors Interests and Volunteering Active Ageing Leadership Awards. The City won the award for its Seniors Assistance Fund.
Water Efficiency – The City of Melville was in October announced as the winner in the Local Government Water Efficiency category of the WA Water Awards 2006.
