The memorandum of Understanding between the City of Melville and the subdistrict of Lete-Foho was signed in October 2005.

Subsequently the local community of Lete-Foho identified needs for which they required help. The areas of greatest need were in education, health and the water supply.

The Lete-Foho community is well aware that the Melville Friends are also a community based group with limited funds to assist them. Projects need to fit within government policy and guidelines.

It was decided to make the addition of a classroom to the community Senior High School at Lete-Foho the initial focus of our activity.

The other areas are vitally important but currently it is beyond the resources of the Friends to offer assistance. It is recognised that education is the key to better health. There are national programs in health and provision of better water supplies which are gradually being implemented. The provision of a classroom and some of the school’s resource needs was felt to be feasible and can be achieved quickly and at relatively low cost.
