Works Commence on $5 million upgrade to Melville Aquatic Fitness Centre

Published Date: 12 May 2011, 02:51 PM

On Monday, 18 April, work started on an exciting $5 million upgrade to the Melville Aquatic Fitness Centre (MAFC) in Booragoon.

The redevelopment is expected to be completed by end of May 2012 and comes in response to the increased popularity of MAFC, which was visited by 447,276 people in 2006/07 and later received an estimated 660,000 people in 2009/10.

Acting-CEO John Christie said there would be minimal disruption for the clientele but there would be some changes to operations during construction.

“The main entrance to the Centre will be via the current emergency exit of the current Creche. This can be found to the left of the usual entrance pathway leading into the centre,” he said.

“All current clients will need to upgrade their membership cards to allow them to gain access to the Centre during and after the upgrade. Your current cards can be switched over at front reception next time you visit. Every child and adult will need their own card.”

Creche facilities will still be available from 8.30am to 12.30pm on weekdays during the upgrade and bookings are essential.

Parents are asked to keep their children with them at all times and pay extra attention to signage within the Centre. The public is asked to follow lifeguard’s instructions when required and keep an eye out for changes to traffic conditions.

“The Melville Aquatic Fitness Centre is almost at full capacity and, as a result, the time has come to reinvest in this centre,” Acting-CEO John Christie said.

“The Centre has a high level of passing traffic and is closely located to one of Perth’s busiest shopping centres. In fact, it is located within a five kilometre radius of 95 per cent of the City of Melville’s population.

“This initiative is about the responsible development of a community facility, which services a large and diverse group of residents.

“The changes will include: a larger gymnasium; a group cycling facility; an interactive water playground; a dedicated room for wellness programs (such as yoga and pilates); expanded toilet and changing facilities; physically interactive gaming for teenagers; and additional office space.”
